A Race to the DEATH??? This MAS Student is Running His Own PR Campaign (Feat. Liquid Death)

Share Post

Liquid Death is the most interesting brand on the planet right now. At least, they're having the most fun. And Andy Pearson, their VP of Creative, is the brain behind so much of it.

So imagine our surprise last week when we say good ol' Andy talking on his podcast about OUR Miami Ad School copywriting student, Aidan Hass.

What's going on? Just a regular, everyday, race to the death...between two of the ad world's most creative minds. One experienced and established. One thirsty for a taste of the limelight...

We asked Aidan Haas for the all the juicy details.

MAS: SO HOW DID THIS COME ABOUT??? AN IDEA IN THE SHOWER? A BEER AFTER WORK?

Aidan Hass: I initially had been some project ideas for Liquid Death and Strava that lived independently of each other. They merged when one of my teachers, Lis Mery, encouraged me to use the ideas for the D&AD brief “Make Your Mark.” The brief called to target an agency or individual of your choice using a social media campaign and show off your work once you have their attention. I knew Pearson is an ultramarathon guy so I assumed he had a Strava account. Which he does. He does not have nearly as many followers on Strava as other platforms so I knew he would see my posts when I tagged him. I attached my video in the media function of one of my runs and tagged him.

NO WAY YOU EXPECTED THIS TO WORK...RIGHT???

I knew that he would see my video on the app, but I didn’t expect the level of interaction. I know he’s a busy guy so I was hoping a Strava DM acknowledging it with some work thoughts. So I’m glad that he appreciated my process and our shared love for weird endurance activities.

WHAT'S NEXT? YOU MUST HAVE A GRAND PLAN

I have a Race To The Death bake sale video up, paying homage to a tactic that Pearson did as well when he was in ad school. I have some other plans in the works but I’m still scheming.

WHAT'S YOUR CONNECTION TO ULTRAMARATHON?

I have zero connection to ultramarathon. I have never done an ultramarathon in my life. I cap my crazy at marathons and Ironman stuff but maybe this will unlock an ultramarathon switch in my brain. I think, like most sports, it teaches discipline and a commitment to a process. There is a very direct correlation between the work you put into training and positive results. I think that holds true for most things in life and the same goes for working on your creative craft.

ANY NERVES ABOUT THE DEATH RACE?

I’m nervous about:
1) lack of bathrooms in the middle of the desert
2) sand in my shoes
3) eating energy bars for three days.

I don’t have any expectations for the race itself. It’s going to be an awesome experience in a beautiful place.

WHY SHOULD LIQUID DEATH GIVE YOU A JOB?

Hiring a really smart, cool, talented, epic copywriting-endurance-athlete who you can train for races with, who can also grow out a sick thick mustache? Dream employee.
